History and Notes on WUZ

I wrote WUZ back in 1989. I took the parser and skeleton frame from my previous text adventures (all coded and compiled using QuickBasic) stripped it down and slimmed down the vocabulary to make it a small file. Back then size mattered. It was written on a boring afternoon. I intended it to be a short, tongue in cheek 'adult' farce that could be played in a half hour and provide some chuckles. I decided to add the options to choose your sex as well as your sexual preference. I altered the game responses to reflect those choices. I did this because no other game writer had used that approach. It was quite easy and didn't present any challenge - I didn't see any reason not to add it. Besides, it would expand the game's playability for male, female, straight or gay.

I seem to recall - after all these years it just might be imagination - that my friend, External Knightmare, who was an obsessed and possessed malware writer wanted a vehicle for a trojan he wrote. I suggested using a sex game - since nothing would fly over the BBS scene as fast as a 'sex' game - no matter how crude or simple it was. Despite being an evil genius when it came to malicious coding - Knightmare was at a loss how to write any such game and make it appear 'innocent' enough to get his trojan through. I boasted I could write one in an afternoon - then proceeded to do it. Once finished I decided I'd release it - trojan free - to add to my list of other releases.

I released it on the two major commercial BBS sites - CompuServe and GEnie, as I did with all my releases. The program was promptly banned by both. This annoyed me because I felt I had given enough warnings even within the game itself of its adult nature. They were concerned about the kiddies that populated these sites. I believed then - as I do now - it is up to parents to do their job and supervise their children and what they are doing on the computer and online.
So I distributed it to some local boards and a few big 'national' BBS's and basically forgot about it. I got absolutely no feedback from anyone. I believe it showed up in a few of those 'software catalogs'  but - charging as they did for 'free' software - I didn't expect a wide distribution.

Fast forward to 2005 when doing a Google search to see if any of my games survived - I came across this:

Oldies But Goodies - games that you may not be playing, but should

This month I was thinking about a fun little game called WUZ. You start off the game deciding your gender, and the game changes the elements accordingly, which gets interesting.

Like all games of its age, the commands are simple and not as varied as we are used to, and the maze does get difficult to navigate, but once you find the Elaborate Mirror you can really start to play. You go to a bar to pick up someone, get probed by aliens, get gang raped, meet a satyr and finish off by teaching royalty about sex.

It is rather unique, but a nice way to waste a few minutes. As far as replay value; you have to replay it 4 times, twice as a man and twice as a woman, to experience everything, the sex scenes are a bit silly but kind of sexy. The varied nature of the game does show the initiative that pioneered modern AIF games. - The AIF Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 2 28-FEB-05

I was surprised - to say the least - that nearly 20 years after WUZ being released it was finally getting a review? It was also available for downloading - which I did - and there it was: my complete package intact from 1989! Wow, talk about memories flashing back...

WUZ had somehow found its way from the small circle of Boards I uploaded it to - through the long years - onto the internet where it still was bouncing around. It was circulating further and surviving longer than any virus External Knightmare wrote. WUZ seemed to have developed a life of its own. So I thought it deserved it's own 'official' website so it could come home after so many years wandering on its own.

Another Review:

WUZ: Here is a novelty: a DOS text adventure game that can be played by men or women. You awaken in a strange cell with the door wide open. You start out knowing nothing, even your own gender, which you can select when your fairy godfather (complete in drag) shows up and grants you a wish. Your goal is to wander around and figure out what is going on. If you get stuck wandering, you'll need to reflect more closely on your situation, and the answer will be right on the tip of your tongue. You can save a game at any time. - EroticGuide.com

To be honest - when I come across discussions of WUZ in this era (meaning 2005 to present) I am amazed because this game I wrote as a lark in 1989. When I read these people giving opinions about such an old game - let alone reviewing it YEARS later - it's just bizarre! I had no idea, in 1989, that my game would have lasted so many years. I fully expected the interest (both negative and positive) in the game would have died out in a few years - most DOS games did. When DOS was no longer the primary OS of the PC I certainly would have thought any life WUZ may have still had would be over. Seems WUZ is full of surprises.

If you are, for some twisted reason, interested in this arcane piece of historical software I've made two versions available for download.
